LESSON 8

LEARNING EXPRESS LIBRARY

I checked out the Algebra Practice and Reading Comprehension Practice. I then looked at eBooks "1001 Vocabulary & Spelling Questions" and "Just In Time For Algebra". I, personally, haven't ever used Learning Express but I have told patrons about it and helped them get started. So, this was a good way for me to get a little experience at using it!

LESSON 7

ArchiveGrid

Discovery Exercise Part 1

1. I learned that Sitting Bull was a Native American shaman and leader of the Hunpapa Sioux. He fought against the Crow Indians and was at the battle of the Little Bighorn. After he was captured he toured with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show.

2. I searched for Seth Bullock. I got 8 results, 3 from Montana Historical Society, 3 from Harvard University, 1 from Syracuse University & 1 from University of Wyoming.

CAMIO

Discovery Exercise Part 2

1. Paul Revere: I see prints, decorative arts & utilitarian objects, and paintings by him.

2. Sioux: I found 63 works including costume & jewelry, books, dolls, sculptures, drawings & watercolors, decorative arts & utilitarian objects, paintings, photographs. When you click on an item you get a description, who the creator is, where located, etc.

3. I searched for Van Gogh and found 45 works: paintings, drawings & watercolors, prints. I like the "View A High-Resolution Full Image".

4. This, obviously, would be a terrific resource for students doing reports or maybe for collectors as well.

5. I have never used CAMIO before. It was a lot of fun to choose paintings and try all the different things you can do with them after you add them to favorites.

LESSON 6

DISCOVERY EXERCISE PART 1
WORLDCAT

1. There are a alot of ways to search in the Advanced tab such as: Access Method, Accession Number, Author, Language Phrase, Material Type, Material Type Phrase, etc.

2. I searched for "Burning Lamp" by Amanda Quick and found 15 Records, with 667 libraries owning the item and Brookings Public Library was the top library.

3. Class Descriptor: LC: PS3561.R44
Other things include: Genre/Form, ISBN & LCCN, Language, Publication, Author, Year

DISCOVERY EXERCISE PART 2
OAIster

I have used WorldCat quite a bit for ILL, but haven't used the other FirstSearch Indexes too much. I really liked it and it was fairly simple to use.

LESSON 5

NetLibrary

1. I searched for dreams and didn't find as much as I thought I would. I did find a few books that would be helpful though and I liked the Related Topics.

2. I chose "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fitness" by Claire Walter & Annette Tannander Bank. It looked like it had some sound advice for people trying to get in shape. It wasn't a quick fix but a down to basics-hard work, exercise & the right food choices.

3. I found 78 eBooks when I put "Oklahoma" in the search box. There seemed to be a good selection of books to choose from which would be a good place for the patron to start.

LESSON 4

GALE VIRTUAL REFERENCE LIBRARY

1. I chose "World Religions Reference Library" and then chose "Ancient Religions of Egypt & Mesopotamia" from the table of contents. There was more than enough information to be found. I liked the sidebar: "Words to Know" as well as the info found in other sidebars, very helpful. We could use this resource in our library in a number of ways. Students would find it very helpful as well as other patrons just looking for information.

2. ZINC
I found as abundance of info on zinc, everything you'd want to know but didn't think to ask. Not only did I find the best food sources, but also precautions, side effects, and many other things. I was actually surprised at how much information I found.

THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN
After doing the Basic Search, you can click right on "Criticism" and get the literary criticism you were after.
